Blessed Man

The Blessed Man

Blessed is the man that hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, and hath not sat in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law will he exercise himself day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the water-side that will bring forth his fruit in due season. His leaf also shall not wither; and look, whatsoever he doeth, it shall prosper.

Who is the blessed man? The early church fathers recognized that the man being spoken of is, first and foremost, Jesus Christ. He is the one who perfectly delights in the law, rightly interprets, and fulfills it. In his earthly ministry he meditated upon it day and night.

As Augustine says "(Psalm 1:1) should be understood as referring our Lord Jesus Christ, that is the Lord-man... "who has not gone astray" ... as did the earthly man (Adam) who conspired with his wife, already beguiled by the serpent to disregard God's commandments. Christ most certainly came in the way of sinners by being born as sinners are, but he did not stand for it, for worldly allurement did not hold him." In addition to Augustine many other church fathers hold this connection including Eusebius of Caesarea and Jerome.

Secondarily however, it was recognized by Hilary, St. Basil the Great, and other early church commentators that the Christian, in so much as "strives to conform himself" to Christ, he becomes the blessed man.

In this sense, the entire Christian life is one in which we strive after becoming the blessed man and growing in Christlikeness. To this end, I have spun up a humble website to serve as a repository of my thoughts and meditations. It will merely be notes from one pilgrim to another as we walk the path before us. It may take the form of hymns I write, psalm / scriptural meditations, book reviews, or a summary of research into a particular biblical or historical topic. I hope my writing benefits you on your pilgrimage of life.
